Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine:
What is Moxa or Moxabustion?

Moxibustion is a process by which a Chinese herb, mugwort, is burned near the skin in order to warm acupuncture points. Moxibustion is especially appropriate for certain types of disorders and certain types of individuals. A small portion of the herb may be placed on the end of a needle and burned, or the herb may be held near the patient’s skin by the practitioner as it burns. Moxibustion is helpful for certain types of painful conditions and for balancing individuals who require more warming (Yang) energy.

The heat from the moxa is very calming, similar to the warmth of the sun as it penetrates deeper into the body. Although the smell is somewhat similar to marijuana, it has none of the effects or chemicals and is perfectly legal. It is useful for injures, pain, digestive problems, menstrual problems, cold, Qi and Blood stagnation.

Therapeutic Mineral Heat Lamps provide the same type of heat and are often a modern substitution for the moxa herb.

Patients find moxabustion extremely warming, nourishing and soothing and generally doze off to sleep during the treatment and awake refreshed and energized.
