Acupuncture Briefly: History & Science

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture's origin dates back 3000 years in China and has been a method of reducing and managing pain naturally, without drugs, through the use of very thin, sterile, needles inserted into mapped points on the body.

People suffering from back pain & migraine headaches to infertility have experienced positive results from Acupuncture and Chinese Herbal Medicine. The insertion of needles at various points can help improve circulation to keep the body’s natural bioelectrical energy balanced and flowing, according to Oriental medical theory. Acupuncture can eliminate blockages in the bioelectrical flow, which, in turn, can promote natural healing. Research has shown that acupuncture can increase your body’s resistance to both viral and bacterial infections by stimulating your immune system.

An acupuncture treatment is normally a pleasant, relaxing experience. Some people even fall asleep. The needles are as thin as a human hair and most patients never experience any discomfort when they’re inserted. Some people feel a warm sensation, others euphoria, some numbness or heaviness.

Is Acupuncture Safe?

Acupuncture physicians receive extensive training and are licensed by strict state regulatory boards. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved acupuncture needles for use by licensed practitioners in 1996. We use only disposable one-time-use needles in our practice.

Scientific Support:

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and Acupuncture Study Conclusions

In various controlled case studies and clinical experiments involving acupuncture, results have shown:

Acupuncture can inhibit pain transmission along the spine by releasing the body’s own natural chemical pain relievers called endogenous opioid peptides (such as endorphins, enkephalins, dynorphins and endomorphins).
Acupuncture increases blood flow and oxygen supply to the brain, confirmed by transcranial Doppler sonography and single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT).
Acupuncture can be therapeutic for various pain syndromes such as: tension headache, migraine, trigeminal neuralgia, post traumatic pain, lumbar syndrome and ischialgia.
Acupuncture can be therapeutic for those suffering from the effects of a stroke and peripheral facial nerve palsy.
Acupuncture has proven biochemical and neurophysiological effects.
